Remembering Dr. Grigorian’s Legacy


It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Mark Grigorian, a revered researcher, author, and structural engineer. Dr. Grigorian’s contributions to the field of structural engineering and his dedication to education have left an indelible mark on the academic community and beyond.

 

Dr. Mark Grigorian (July 11, 1940 – 4:30 am June 5, 2024, Yerevan) was the Founding Chair of the Structural Engineering Faculty at Sharif University of Technology, CEO of IRITEC, and Founder and Chief Structural Engineer of MGA Structural Consultants, Inc. His legacy is one of innovation, dedication, and profound influence on both his colleagues and students.

Dr. Grigorian completed his BSc and MSc in structural engineering at the University of Manchester, UK, under the mentorship of the esteemed Professor Wilfred Merchant. He then earned his doctorate at the University of Oxford and continued his post-doctoral studies there.

Dr. Grigorian played a crucial role as a member of the AESA team dispatched to Armenia following the 1988 earthquake. He also contributed significantly to the AESA-organized team tasked with assessing and recommending measures to enhance the seismic resilience of buildings in Armenia after the disaster. More recently, Dr. Grigorian was involved in a critical project focused on the removal of asbestos from the Arax River, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to Armenia’s environmental health and safety.
