John Leylegian

Biography

Dr. Leylegian is an Associate Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. He most recently served as Department Chairperson from 2018 to 2022. His teaching responsibilities have included classes primarily focused on the thermal-fluid sciences, and his research interest has primarily been the generation of reduced chemical kinetic models for CFD applications in engines, and modeling of hypersonic air breathing propulsion systems. In addition to his teaching, Dr. Leylegian has been a part-time subject matter expert at Innoveering, LLC since 2016, which is currently owned by GE Aviation. His work there has focused on hypersonic propulsion data analysis, fuel formulations for regenerative cooling, and improved ground-test techniques for high speed wind tunnels.

Dr. Leylegian was employed at ATK Tactical Propulsion and Controls New York Operations (Originally GASL, Inc., currently a part of Northrop Grumman) from April 2000 to September 2008, and held the title of Senior Scientist in the Aerodynamics and Propulsion Analysis Department. He served as Technical Lead for various programs dealing with hypersonic propulsion and novel energy conversion. He was involved in the coordination of fuels and energy-related projects at ATK, and was routinely consulted by the technical staff on the design, testing, and data analysis of chemically reacting systems. He also participated in safety reviews of the wind tunnel facility systems at ATK.

Dr. Leylegian received the Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Arts, and Master of Science in Engineering degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 2000, 1997, and 1996, respectively. Dr. Leylegian received the Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering summa cum laude from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 1994. He is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Combustion Institute. He is also a member of the Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma Honor Societies, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
