Dr. Reisenbauer will share how concepts such as catalytic promiscuity and directed evolution are expanding what is possible in enzyme-driven chemistry and opening new pathways for synthetic applications. \nShort Abstract:\nEnzymes are Nature’s catalysts\, evolved to construct and break down chemical molecules with remarkable efficiency and selectivity. While their activities are shaped by natural selection\, many enzymes exhibit promiscuous functions that provide starting points for synthetic applications. By leveraging fundamental concepts such as catalytic promiscuity and directed evolution\, we repurpose and engineer these biocatalysts to perform non-native transformations\, thereby expanding the accessible chemical space. \nBio:\nDr. Julia C. Reisenbauer has been an Assistant Professor in the field of biocatalysis and protein engineering at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) since February 2026\, where her research group investigates how synthetic chemical methodologies can be replaced and further advanced through the use of engineered enzymes. After completing her doctoral studies in organic chemistry at ETH Zurich as an SSCI fellow\, she pursued postdoctoral research in enzyme engineering at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as an SNSF Postdoc. Mobility fellow. In his career\, he has directed more than 20 documentaries\, shorts\, and features\, including TEVANIK\, The Last Inhabitant\, and Gate to Heaven — each grounded in real human stories from Artsakh. \nHis forthcoming feature explores war\, memory\, and the evolution of artificial intelligence. The film unfolds during the 2020 Artsakh War and the global pandemic\, and imagines AI as a developing consciousness shaped by human experience. Currently serves as the head of the Department of Science of the University of Traditional Medicine of Armenia\, Ph.D. student and junior researcher at L.A. Orbeli Institute of Physiology NAS RA. Co-Founder of Foldink Corp.\, an Armenian-American 3D bioprinting company founded in 2019. Member of the Board of Trustees of Kochard Foundation. 🏥 Past experience: volunteer of the Armenian Red Cross Society 2013-2021\, 3D modeler in Locator CJSC 2011-2015. \n📄 Summary:\nThe problem of peripheral nervous tissue defects (aka nerve gaps) in nerve ruptures is of considerable scientific interest in modern medicine. Such tissue defects can occur as a result of a number of injuries. If the nerve layers’ continuity is maintained or restored after being severed\, these layers begin to serve as regenerative tunnels for the regenerating axons. Otherwise\, nerve regeneration can become very challenging or virtually impossible. In the absence of a nerve defect or in case of very small defects\, the nerve needs to be sutured end-to-end. In the case of larger defects\, however\, a nerve graft is needed\, and autografting is the golden standard. Yet\, it is associated with problems such as limited donor sites\, the need for additional surgery\, possible scarring\, donor site morbidity\, neuroma formation at the donor site\, as well as the possibility of graft mismatch. DESCRIPTION:AESA\, in partnership with the Salmast Heritage Association\, cordially invites you to mark your calendar for an evening dedicated to honoring scientific excellence. \nHonoree\, Dr. Narek Gharibyan serves as the deputy group leader of the Nuclear and Radiochemistry Group at the Laboratory. He has supported experimental nuclear science at the National Ignition Facility including as the responsible scientist for a radiochemical diagnostic fielded during high-yield fusion shots.  Other research interests in nuclear and radiochemistry include isotope production\, chemical separations\, measurements relevant to nuclear reactions and decay properties\, and the application of nuclear science for national security. \n In 2012\, Dr. Gharibyan\, alongside Dawn Shaughnessy and Evgeny Tereshatov\, participated in the confirmation experiment for element 117 at GSI Darmstadt\, Germany.  In this experiment\, the scientists bombarded a berkelium target with calcium ions to produce element 117. Following this independent confirmation experiment\, in 2015\, element 117 was named tennessine with the symbol Ts. \nSpace is Limited\, RSVP is required. \n
